MediaTek become World’s third Largest Smartphone Chip Manufacturer
In the first half of this year, MediaTek has a rapid growth of shipments, becoming world’s third largest smartphone chip maker, achieving the best performance since the found of the company, due to high demand for low-end handset in Chinese mainland.
According to reporter, MediaTek’s revenue in September has rushed to 11 billion NT, better than the estimated 10 billion NT from foreign capital circle. It is projected, Credit Suisse said, smartphone chip of MediaTek in the third quarter may has shipped 38.5 million, the shipments for the fourth quarter remain growth, single-quarter challenging 42 million units, the whole year challenging the record of 110 million, much higher than the estimated target of 95 million.
Deutsche Securities and Credit Suisse Securities believe bolstered by smartphone demand, MediaTek is likely to get rid of the strong recessionary situation in the off-season. Credit Suisse foresees driven by the adoption of dual-core smartphone chip by many white-box handset and Chinese brand mobile phone manufacturers, the single-quarter operating income of MediaTek in the fourth quarter is predicted to be better than the previously off-season level, only down by 6% compared with in the third quarter.
MediaTek gets 72.53 billion NT in the first three quarters, a 12.9% year-on-year growth. For the good performance of smartphone chips including 2.75G and 3G in the second half of this year, MediaTek’s handset sector in the last week organized a celebration party.
According to technology market research institutes StrategyAnalysis, MediaTek is prosperous in shipping smartphone chips, enabling its rank in the first half of this year jumping to the third from the previous fifth, leaving Broadcom and TI behind. Qualcomm and Samsung still dominate the top two positions.
The sales amount of global smartphone application processor in the first half of this year, StrategyAnalysis said, reaches $5.5 billion (160 billion NT), with annual growth rate of 61%.
Intel, the global computer processor leader, has just step into phone application processor market, but it achieves 0.2% market shares on shipments in the first half of this year, mainly resulting from the driving of 32nm “Mediafield” processor. While Marvell Electronics dropped out of the top five, because its largest customer ResearchInMotion (RIM) was trapped in trouble.
