Line persists despite shrinking demand, supplier base
Hong Kong’s exports of NiCd batteries have been in a downward trend in recent years. Overseas shipments in 2009 were about 224 million units, 66 percent lower than in 2008, a result of the shift to more environment-friendly solutions such as lithium and NiMH. The territory’s maker pool has also been declining, with only 15 companies engaged in the line at present. But despite waning demand, the sector is in no danger of disappearing soon as the chemistry still finds uses in various fields. NiCd remains in production because of its deep discharge capacity and suitability for high- and low-temperature applications.
Manufacturers of NiCd batteries and packs in Hong Kong offer solutions for emergency and garden lights, vacuum cleaners and various other devices requiring an alternative power backup system. They also serve the power tools and electronic vehicle segments. Although most enterprises are small and midsize, operations are ISO 9001-compliant.
Suppliers can develop any cell size and customize capacity, pin attachments or connectors per clients’ specifications. Models come in a wide range of form factors, including AAA, 1/2AA, 2/3AA, 4/5AA, AA, 7/5AA, 1/3A, 1/2A, 2/3A, 4/5A, A, 7/5A, C, D, 2D, F and 9V. Button cell and tailor-made prismatic gum stick designs, and multi cell configurations are also available. Products usually conform to CE and UL requirements.
Battery packs are mainly shipped with insulated plastic packaging but the batteries can be encased in flame-resistant, nontoxic plastic outer container. Companies can also design standard-, low- and high-temperature versions. Extra services such as free one-color silk-screening are provided by some makers.
Several enterprises bundle their products with chargers or emergency lighting conversion kits for added value. Most have in-house brands and offer retail-ready packaging for resellers, although many also cater to OEM clients. They likewise supply related accessories to provide one-stop services.
