Home Lighting-the Major Driving Force of LED driver IC
Global LED driver IC for generally lighting is expected to triple in revenue, reaching $666 million in 2015, up from $214 million in 2012, further come to $810 million in 2018, according to IMS Research.
Stephanie Pruitt, lighting and LEDs analyst for HIS said, “Major advances and cost reductions in lamps, luminaires and automotive lighting are spurring the rapid growth of the market for LEDs in general lighting applications.”
“This in turn is generating major opportunities for LED driver ICs. Once dominated by the display backlighting business, the LED driver IC market now is being driven by the soaring market for general lighting.”
Fueled by the low cost of IC, the increasing participants as well as government support, Asia-Pacific region leads the LED driver IC market, accounting for 59.6% of the total market. And it is expected the compound annual growth rate to be 32.5% from 2010 to 2015.
On the growing field side, home lighting will show the greatest opportunity for LED driver IC. Residential field develops late, and has huge consumer potential and the largest number of sockets available for LED bulbs, especially in emerging markets such as China, India, and Africa.
Other significant application segments include retail, the street/parking lighting and tablets. Due to the gradual saturation, cellphone display, TV and signage backlights slow down in expansion.
