Analysis about Chip demand in China’s Various Markets in 2012
Electronic information industry has entered Jobs-said “post-PC era” or mobile Internet era, mobile intelligent terminal with representative of smartphone and Tablet PC has become the core power driving semiconductor market growth, the CSIP (Software and Integrated Circuit Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry) pointed out in the research report in November, 2012.
1. Market demand for mobile phone chip
With the rapid development of mobile Internet, smartphone-representative mobile intelligent terminal has a strong development. 2012 a year suffering global economic downturn, many industries have stopped growth even recessed, but there is an explosive increase for smartphone in 2012. IHS predicted Chinese smartphone capacity in 2012 will reach 181 million units; by 2015, smartphone will account for over 85% market shares in Chinese handset market. As such smartphone market is a space-huge and potential market.
Another consumption hotspot in mobile phone market is 3G handsets. TD-SCDMA chip expects to reach 120 million in 2014; and WCDMA chip in 2014 forecasts to ship nearly 200 million; taking into account of the huge capacity of WCDMA in the worldwide market as well as user’s demand for international roaming, TD-SCDMA and WCDMA based multi-mode terminal chip market will has huge opportunity.
2. Chinese domestic TV (STB) chip market demand
The annual production of color TV 120 million in Chinese mainland need purchase about 110 million TV SOC main-chip from Taiwan-funded and foreign companies, where Taiwan MediaTek is the major suppliers, approximately representing 90% of Chinese mainland’s TV chip purchases. Chinese local chip companies HuayaMicro currently can provide such chips, but is still in the trial stage of small quantities, yet achieving large-scale industrial applications; the digital television multi-chip smart TV program from HiSilicon Semiconductor has begun the mass production for color TV manufacturers, single chip SOC main chip solution is still in the research. At present, the majority of digital TV SOC main chip used in Chinese mainland market is bought from Taiwan-funded enterprises, providing market opportunity for Chinese local chip corporate researching and developing “import alternative” products.
