Suppliers target broadband, telecom segments

Robust demand for upscale DC-DC converters used in broadband and telecom devices is prompting Taiwan makers to release models with higher frequency, power density and reliability, smaller form factors and standard certification. The last includes RoHS, EMI, UL and CE. Units meant for low-end applications in home appliances and consumer electronics, however, remain in ample supply.

Enterprises also continue to launch variants for industrial computers, portable test equipment, and automatic control, communication and power systems.

Orders are likewise coming in from new markets such as the solar energy, LED lighting and automotive sectors. Switching power supplies used in transportation, military and aviation purposes drive demand as well.

Models with 1 to 30W are currently the mainstream, but companies can provide versions with a greater rating on buyers’ request.

As customization remains a key trend, clients can also specify other requirements, including the footprint, voltage and environment-protection features. The efficiency of low-end kinds is 70 to 85 percent, while that of upscale varieties ranges from 85 to more than 90 percent. Products come in SMD or DIP package.

Taiwan has over 200 designers and makers in the power supply industry, and 30 to 40 of these specialize in DC-DC converters. The majority of companies prefer manufacture done in the island to ensure better management control and quality. About half of them, however, have set up factories in mainland China to carry out mass production.
