Expansion targets consumer electronics

Hong Kong suppliers of raw speakers have expanded to various consumer audio products to keep orders and profits at healthy levels notwithstanding competition with mainland China rivals. These cover headsets, earphones, loudspeakers, multimedia and surround speakers, and PA systems. Some makers have also entered into partnerships with mainland companies involved in LCD TV and digital photo frame assembly. Others have stepped up trading activities.

The territory offers a range of sizes, colors, shapes and output ratings to suit different audio requirements. As most suppliers have been in the field for more than 10 years, they can provide ready-made models. There are 9 and 10mm units for earphones and handsfree systems, 20 to 50mm variants for headphones and other audio devices, and general speakers with more than 100mm diameter. Special features such as water resistance can be included.

The miniaturization trend has also given Hong Kong companies a boost in recent years, broadening their product portfolios further. There are models for notebook PCs, mini speakers, mobile phones, media players and other portable electronic devices. Some integrate a microphone. The smallest units are available in SMD form factor.

In addition to consumer electronics, special designs for niche applications such as hearing aids and stadium loudspeakers are offered. Car speakers are a subcategory, often dispatched in retail and white boxes. Products are mostly shipped in bulk packages to integrators, and distributors and wholesalers in the aftermarket.

Hong Kong has at least 20 suppliers specializing in OEM projects, with ODM services provided on a limited scale. Most make their own acoustic components or source from the mainland. Others market related lines such as buzzers and transducers.

Companies typically have in-house engineers handling testing, analysis and raw material evaluation to ensure improved product sound quality and durability, and lower costs. Compliance with environment regulations is within the R&D scope as well.
