The Analysis of Chinese MEMS Sensor Market
Sensing technology is a technology accessing information and the cornerstone of IT. In the 80th China Electronics Fair, Dr. Ge Ji from the China Electronic Information Industry Development Institute shared his analysis for Chinese MEMS sensor market.
From product structure perspective, pressure sensors, acceleration sensors occupy relatively large shares. He said, “Driven by the further growth of China’s automotive electronics and medical electronics production, the market shares of pressure sensor rank the first, but declines by 1.2 percent compared with 2010, reaching 26.5%, due to the strong expansion of acceleration products. In 2011, under the output growth of mobile phones, tablet PCs, notebooks and other products, plus the further enhance of the penetration in the complete machine, acceleration sensor has a rapid growth in market size, achieving sales of 4.51 billion RMB in 2011 with market shares rising to 25.7% from 24.1% in 2010, ranking the second. Bolstered by the huge production of Chinese products such as projectors, printers, along with the expansion in handset application, acceleration sensor also accounts for relatively large market shares in DMC micromirror array, silicon microphone and inkjet print head in 2011.
In addition to the pressure sensor and the acceleration sensor, the micromechanical gyroscope growth is also very rapid. Due to the realization of large-scale applications in mobile phones and tablet, micro-machined gyroscope in recent years reaches the average annual compound growth rate of 52%. Because of the small base, coupling with the unit price support, it is expected the future RF switches and bio-MEMS devices will maintain high-speed growth. Negative growth only happened on the inkjet print head, due to the early industrialization and the relatively simple technology, the ink jet print head market has become saturated

From the application perspective, in 2011, MEMS sensor growth in the field of automotive suffered slowdown, achieving sales of RMB 6.28 billion, but the overall size and product price was higher than 3C application, continuously leading the MEMS sensor market in China. The market size of MEMS sensor in the area of network and communication was RMB 4.32 billion with market shares rising to 24.6% from 22.9% in 2010, having a fastest rapid growth in all areas. Acceleration sensor, the silicon microphone continued improving the application ratio in mobile phone, some new products such smaller-size DMD as well as MEMS laser scanner, geomagnetic sensor and micro-mechanical gyroscopes also began to get scale applications in smartphone, promoting the rapid expansion of MEMS sensor’s market size in this realm; but with the rapid development of the Chinese automotive industry and automotive electronics industries in the previous two years, the growth rate in the field of smartphone slowed down. And the rapid development of Tablet PC in 2011 made the acceleration sensor demand in computer area further climb. Computer has become the third application market for Chinese MEMS sensor, with market size of RMB 3.71 billion and market shares at 21.1%.
According to the brand structure of MEMS sensor, currently Chinese market is still dominated by foreign manufacturers, the top ten MEMS sensor makers account for more than 50% market shares; in 2011, benefiting from the production growth of Chinese computers and the completer machine in communication area, along with the increasingly enhance of MEMS sensor application in handset, Tablet PC and other 3C products, ST, TI and other manufacturers who focus on the above fields further consolidated their position. In addition, Freescale, ADI and other manufacturers also got a good achievement in Chinese MEMS sensor market due to their widely involved in consumer electronics, automotive electronics and industrial control. The good performance of Professional MEMS sensor manufacturers Triquint in the area of RF MEMS also enabled it entering into the list of Chinese top ten MEMS suppliers. But Bosch and other complete-machine MEMS sensor enterprises declined their market shares compared with 2010.
