Varied designs enhance visual appeal

Rubber keypads from Hong Kong have evolved from being simple input devices to stylish peripherals available in various shapes and colors. Makers develop new coatings and finishes to enhance functional performance and aesthetic appeal.

The design options include transparent or multicolor base, plastic keytops, elastomer film or metallic coating, hard epoxy coating/potting, negative printing, laser etching, anti-UV protection and luminous rubber base or prints.

Silicone is widely preferred for its conductive properties, availability in any color and suitability for printing. Companies employ techniques to ensure durability despite the inherent softness of the material. Varied coatings and finishes are also employed to prolong life span.

Besides enhancing the visual appeal, makers ensure that the keypads conform to clients’ requirements. Some suppliers use rubber molds for plastic keypads.

Most products are shipped to manufacturers of mobile phones and remote controls. Other applications include desktop and cordless phones, calculators, electronic dictionaries, office machines, game controllers and toys. Several companies also serve clients from the industrial, medical and automotive sectors.

There are about 20 makers of rubber keypads in Hong Kong. Some are specialists in this line, while others with injection and compression molding and printing equipment pursue it as a secondary business. Most manufacture rubber parts such as gaskets or related items, including membrane switches. Several apply their design and production expertise to mobile phone accessories and gifts. A few PCB makers also include rubber keypads in their lineups.
